On Tuesday 9th March 2021, the Phuket community celebrated International Women’s Day with a successful luncheon and beverages hosted at Angsana Laguna Phuket.Members of both the local and expat communities of Phuket came together to celebrate the social and economic achievements of women.

The event was opened by a video message from Jacinda Ardern Prime minister of New Zealand encouraging women to continue to take strides in leadership to ensure a better future for females going forward. This was followed by a welcome address by Matthew Barclay, Australia’s Consul-General to Phuket and key sponsor of the event.

The rest of the afternoon was spent hearing empowering speakers share their inspirational stories: Thanaporn Phonboon, from the Australian Consulate-General; Jo Barnes a Phuket based Globetrotting Lifestyle Entrepreneur and Karine Gauthier owner of Body Temple in Singapore.

UWCT shared in the event by having a table of representatives from the school made up of staff, board members, administrators, but most importantly students.

The students were represented by Alisa G12, Beamlak G11 and Lethyce G11 from the UWC Thailand Women in Leadership Scholarship as well as members of the ‘Because I am a Girl (BIG)’, a student-led after school activity that works to raise awareness of female related issues.

The UWCT representatives were honoured to be part of the event and shared the following reflections:

“From the Women’s day event today at Angsana Hotel, I got a chance to learn about how big fundraising events actually work. There were many passionate people with ideas on how to give back to their community, and the guest speakers were also all very inspirational, the first speaker was especially relatable because she spoke about the same kind of experience that we are going through when she talked about her experience as a Thai exchange student in the US. Overall, I really enjoyed the event.”

“One statement that struck me the most is how women have different hats to wear: a hat for being a mother, wife, sister, and a daughter but still manages to be the strong and amazing women that they are. Being in a room with people who are passionate about women’s empowerment and giving back to the community, made me feel more motivated to give back and be grateful for the privilege that I have right now. Overall, I enjoyed listening to the speaker especially Khun Prae who I had deeply related with as she talked about her experiences of going abroad at such a young age.”

“It was great to see the Phuket Community coming together to celebrate all that is good in the world today. It was a fabulous reminder of the power of us, how coming together and working towards a common goal shows that we can achieve what we want.  Despite all the challenges we have faced of late it is fabulous to know that we are part of a community that is so supportive. #ChooseToChallenge  #IWD2021”

A common message that resonated with all participants was the resilience of women. It was amazing to notice that behind the brilliance showcased with the event and spirit, there was a wealth of challenging experiences for women, some of which they turned into opportunities. ‘The Women Are Here’!
