The Grade 11 DP Environment Systems and Societies class visited Ranong, Thailand. The class stayed at the Andaman Sea Coastal Marine Research Facility to learn about different ecosystems and how to measure the biodiversity while also studying conservation practices. This is the fifth year that the Grade 11 class has journeyed up to Ranong and we have never been disappointed. The educators from The Traidhos Program put together an amazing three days. Along with classroom activities to learn different sampling techniques, analysis tools, and proper science writing techniques, the students spent most of their time in the field. Students spent time setting up belt transects to compare biodiversity along a rocky shore; they compared size of limpets based on location; they collected and then compared the species diversity between two different ecosystems; and they took part in a bio-blitz along a sea grass bed to collect as many organisms to identify.
